Coherence resonance in paleoclimatic modeling

چکیده

Abstract Through a unified mathematical framework, the stochastic behavior of three celebrated low-order lumped models, previously proposed for paleoclimate simulations, is considered. Due to coherence resonance mechanism, feedbacks between noise and dynamical system reproduce hallmark Pleistocene climate, i.e. 100 ky pulsation, in range model parameters that unexpectedly wide far from original modeling setting. In this way, issue arbitrary coefficient tuning approaches paleoclimatology can be partially bypassed. A stability analysis considered systems allowed parameter space exploited, order separate deterministic-dominated region stochastic-dominated region. Noise intensity varied closeness Hopf bifurcations and/or bistable conditions investigated understand what make models prone with 100-ky or without forcing induced by varying astronomical parameters.

Coherence resonance in chaotic systems

– We show that it is possible for chaotic systems to display the main features of coherence resonance. In particular, we show that a Chua model, operating in a chaotic regime and in the presence of noise, can exhibit oscillations whose regularity is optimal for some intermediate value of the noise intensity. We find that the power spectrum of the signal develops a peak at finite frequency at in...

Coherence resonance and ice ages

[1] The processes and feedbacks responsible for the 100-kyr cycle of Late Pleistocene global climate change are still being debated. This paper presents a numerical model that integrates (1) long-wavelength outgoing radiation, (2) the ice-albedo feedback, and (3) lithospheric deflection within the simple conceptual framework of coherence resonance. Coherence resonance is a dynamical process tha...

Understanding Sensitivities in Paleoclimatic Reconstructions

Recent publications have seen the introduction of a number of new statistical methods for paleoclimatic reconstructions. When applied to archived multiproxy datasets, most of these methods produce reconstructed curves very similar to the “hockey stick” shape that was first observed by Mann, Bradley and Hughes. However, one recent reconstruction, by McShane and Wyner, produced a sharply differen...

Coherence Resonance in Chaotic Electronic Circuits

Random fluctuations (or noise) usually constitute a source of disorder and are considered, in general, as detrimental in, e. g., linear information theory, electrical engineering or neurobiology. However, it has been shown in the recent past that the quality of the response of a system can be improved if a right amount of noise is added. One of the most well known examples is that of stochastic...
